FRIDAYS AT THE FARM - DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

I eat food every day, but I usually have no idea where it comes from or how it is grown. My ancestors were farmers, but I can hardly plant anything. I wanted to create a film about the origin of my food, but didn’t want to make a documentary filled with facts about the benefits of eating locally grown organic food or the evils of corporate food production.  I chose instead to bring a work of hope and love into the world that was non-confrontational and accessible to folks that might be new to these issues.

Shooting this film with a still camera allowed me to approach this work as a solo artist, without the concerns of recording sound, conducting interviews, or managing a large crew. Going solo empowered me to sink into the observation process on the farm and open up to the miracles unfolding before my eyes.  It wasn’t until the post-production process that I brought someone else in to collaborate - Pete Tramo for music and sound design. We had worked together extensively on my feature film, Invisible Mountains, and I felt comfortable letting him into this very personal project. He encouraged me to make this project as personal as it is, convincing me to keep my voice-over when I wanted to cut it, and insisting that we include some of my own music.  By focusing on my own journey to understand the food, family, and community that sustains me, I hope to inspire viewers to seek deeper connections in their own lives.
