Where Watermelons Grow from Coyopa Productions on Vimeo

"Where Watermelons Grow" is a multi-layered film event that Coyopa Productions seeks to complete by the fall of 2009.  The basic idea is simple: create a meaningful short film for children about a watermelon growing in an unkempt lot. A young boy finds this treasure, and as he becomes a gardener, the lot blossoms into a community garden.

The completed film will be shot in a fulldome format.  Fulldome films are projected onto planetarium domes, and the effect is a completely immersive 180-degree visual experience. "Where Watermelons Grow" is intended for use by fulldome science centers around the world, and would be supplemented with an earth science educational curriculum for classroom use. Appropriate for family viewing,

"Where Watermelons Grow" is a film that will reconnect both young and old to the beauty and magic of witnessing a seed's journey to fruition.

Where this project gets a little complicated is in Coyopa's intent: instead of just shooting a fictional film about an empty lot that evolves into a community garden, we want to inspire real change in a Philadelphia neighborhood.  Small community gardens are oases of tranquility, education, and healthy food, and we want this film to make a difference on a local level.  The mini-trailer you can view above was created to give you the spirit of the longer film we will shoot.

When watching this trailer, keep in mind that the fulldome format would look very different.  To get an idea of the fulldome effect, watch our Seeds of Spring trailer.  The center of the viewing circle will be the top of the dome, with the edges of the circle filling in the periphery of your vision.

Coyopa is currently seeking investors, community partners and donors to make the "Where Watermelons Grow" film happen. Please contact us for more information.  Just email rich@coyopa.com or contact us by phone at (610) 566-6524.
